Insulin syringe lengths and gauges
Insulin needs to be injected subcutaneously, i.e. into the layer of fat between the muscle and the skin.Insulin syringes are available in a variety of needle lengths.
* Short needle length less than 10mmYour health team can help you recommend the best needle length for you.* Longer needles will be over 10mm long
Due to the regularity of injecting insulin, insulin syringes tend to be thin in gauge (width).
Use and Disposal of Insulin Syringes
Today, insulin syringes are for single use only. Before disposing of the syringe, a professional sharps clip device can be used to remove the needle.
Syringes should be discarded in dedicated sharps containers to prevent the risk of contracting blood-borne viruses. Sharps containers are available by prescription, but you can also buy sharps containers from diabetes stores.
U-100 Insulin Syringe
The markings on the side of the syringe show how many units of insulin are in the syringe.
In the UK, insulin is only available to humans as U100 insulin. This means there are 100 units per 1 ml of insulin. Therefore, the U100 insulin syringe provides the correct unit marking for U100 insulin.
In rare exceptions, patients may take U500 insulin. The concentration of this insulin is 5 times that of standard British insulin. Note that insulin from abroad may have a different concentration than UK insulin.
