A chest drainage tube, also known as a chest tube, is a medical device used to remove excess air, fluid, or blood from the pleural space surrounding the lungs. A silicone chest drainage tube is a type of chest tube made of silicone material. Silicone chest drainage tubes are used in cases where a patient has a collapsed lung (pneumothorax), fluid accumulation around the lungs (pleural effusion), or excessive bleeding in the chest cavity. The tube is inserted through a small incision in the chest wall and directed to the pleural space. The other end of the tube is connected to a collection device, such as a drainage bag, that allows healthcare providers to monitor the amount of fluid or air being removed. Silicone chest drainage tubes are preferred by some healthcare providers because they are more flexible and kink-resistant than traditional chest tubes made of other materials. This makes them easier to insert and less likely to become dislodged or blocked. They may also be less likely to cause irritation or injury to the surrounding tissue.
